In 2021, Kuo is predicting a followup to the iPhone SE 2 as well as a new iPhone model without Lightning connectivity. Kuo says that this would “provide the completely wireless experience,” meaning there would be no ports at all rather than a switch to USB-C from Lightning.—Chance Miller, 9to5Mac
For years now, the tech press has been opining for USB-C ports in the iPhone. To which I’ve been saying for an equally long time, why bother with a huge transition like that when it makes much more sense to go completely portless?
Here is a bit of my response to the Wall Street Journal in 2017.
From a cost accountant’s perspective, ports are one step above evil. They require additional manufacturing processes, they extend the time to complete a single unit, they always involve additional components, and they are above-average offenders for warranty repairs. So from a gross margin perspective, it would make sense to ban all ports from the iPhone.—Perezonomics.com 03/03/2017
If you’re wondering what Apple might do, try to guesstimate which is the most profitable option. That won’t always be the answer, but it is more often than not.
