The AirPods 3 are my around-the-house AirPods for listening mainly to Podcasts. The sound quality is a huge improvement to the Airpods 2 and they retain the comfy rest in your ear design. It also allows you to hear your surroundings and not be too isolated. I could wear these AirPods all day long and never feel the slightest discomfort due to pressure or heat.
The AirPods Pro are my travel and working with powered equipment AirPods. As any business traveler will tell you, the comfy rest-in-your-ear design of the AirPods 2 or 3 make it almost impossible to hear a video while sitting in an airplane. It’s the same issue when mowing the lawn or vacuuming your house. I absolutely need my AirPods Pro for making those Saturday chores more enjoyable via listening to my favorite shows or music. But the in-ear design wears on me after an hour. I don’t like the feeling of having foam ear plugs stuffed in my ear canals.
The AirPods Max are the best music listening AirPods you can get. Both the AirPods 3 and Pros have great sound quality but the AirPods Max are on a whole other level. The lows are lower and the instrument separation is amazing. If I’m in the mood to listen to music during my workday I reach for the AirPods Max. The music quality is better than the AirPods 3 and the noise cancellation and comfort is better than the AirPods Pro.
Whenever I hear someone ask which set of AirPods that they should buy, I always respond that it depends on when they want to wear them. Because no one set is going to be good for all situations. My recommendation is that for someone who loves to listen to music and podcasts, you need all 3.
