The meat of the Twitter discussion was how conservatives could move on from Twitter. But conservatives face a big decision. Would their alternative to Twitter be a big libertarian “anything goes” environment? Or would it be the right-wing equivalent of Twitter that cracks down disproportionately on liberals?
Prior to listening to this discussion I had a foot in the Libertarian anything-goes camp. I figured you can’t have the good without the bad. But now, I think Marc Spiegel has changed my mind. I’m now leaning towards a silo’d conservative Twitter alternative. Marc is right, too many people would be turned off by all the Nazi’s and pedophiles. And at the end of the day, people enjoy an environment where they can relate to others. Silo’d social media would be much more financially successful.
Social media is following the same path as humanity in general. God placed humanity on this planet to live as one. However, he knew that ultimately a great schism would arise. Eventually humanity will be “silo’d” into at least two major groups. Those who choose to be a part of God’s impending kingdom and those who do not. When Jesus walked the Earth, he spoke about his coming kingdom more than just about anything else.
And Hell is greatly misunderstood. It simply is separation from God. Jesus tried to make the point to his disciples that this would be a terrible thing so he spoke in metaphors that they could understand. He used the garbage dump outside of Jersusalem where they burned their trash as a metaphor for hell. All the disciples knew this place and understood his imagery. Jesus’s point was that when God finally separated Humanity, His kingdom would be a much better place. Not that humans were literally going to burn.
Also, God doesn’t send anyone to Hell. People willingly choose it during their lifetime. In fact, they crave it. They desire a world without these religious nuts. They get nauseated at the thought of going to church. They think that Christianity is part of what is wrong with the world. They desire separation from God and all his people. Well, God is going to give them their wish. And they will live for all of eternity knowing that it was exactly what they asked and voted for.
It’s joked today that our big tech companies have “God-like” power. That is kind of true in one sense. If Hell means separation, then the tech companies have the power to send people to hell. Would Jack Dorsey or Mark Zuckerburg stand in judgement over countless individuals with whom they find irredeemable and have the double-mindedness to say that they can’t believe in a loving God that sends people to Hell? They would be guilty of the very thing which they accuse God.
I find the whole thing kind of humorous. It reminds me of that Jim Carrey movie Bruce Almighty from the 90s. A man down on his luck accuses God of being unfair. So God, played by Morgan Freeman, gives him his power and asks him to do better. The man finally relents and begs God to give him advice on how to make his girlfriend love him again. God responds with “When you find the answer to that, you let me know”.
