I want my Apple Watch to gain independent LTE connectivity BECAUSE I only want to pay for one data plan. Today I’m already paying for two data plans, one for my iPhone and one for my iPad. I certainly don’t want to add a third for my watch.
I’d love to sign up just one device with AT&T for cell service and data. That device would be the one that is the most convenient for me to carry around in most situations, the Apple Watch. It’d be a dream come true to leave my 6s Plus home when I go out for a run or to the gym. Plus, if I’m leaving the house with my iPad, I wouldn’t need my iPhone too. Besides, my 6s Plus is too large for some pants and makes my jackets hang lopsided. There are some situations I just don’t want to be carrying any device. But a small beautiful wearable with which I can tailor my band to the occasion and not lose connectivity to the world? Perfect
If I had the option of making my Apple Watch the cellular hub allowing me to pick a screen for the occasion, I’d do it in a heart beat. If I was going to leave the house with my iPad, why would I need to take my iPhone? I hate reading books or magazines on my iPhone because the screen is too small. That’s the same reason I much prefer surfing the web on my iPad. Anytime I’m going somewhere that involves sitting in a waiting room I take my iPad. Or anytime I’m going to be reading digital books, like church or some kind of class, I take my iPad.
And you know what? Deep down, I don’t like answering phone calls. If you want to call me for a chat then do it after dinner or on the weekend. But if I’m at work or out running errands. Sorry, send me a message of some sort. I find the aspect of not carrying an iPhone with me 24/7 quite appealing. With a cellular watch I can still be reached if there’s an emergency, get all of my text messages, or call for help should I be in trouble. But am I going to gab on the phone for 45 minutes on my iPad or Apple Watch? Mm, can’t do it now, maybe later. It’s like having the benefits of not carrying a cell phone without any of the downsides.
The fact that the Apple Watch screen is too small to read long-form text is irrelevant. What a cellular Apple Watch would give you is actually the freedom to choose the screen size that best fits the occasion. If it’s an iPad Mini, iPad Pro XL, or even a MacBook so be it. You would only need to carry one device. In today’s world even if you pay for data on your iPad you’re stuck taking your iPhone with you. Why? Because even with a data plan your iPad can’t get cellular calls or text messages. An Apple Watch with a fully featured cellular plan would be so much better.
Now I recognize that this isn’t going to happen overnight. If there was one thing that used to run down the battery on my iPhone it was tethering my iPad to it for data. It was one of the reasons I decided to get my iPad its own data plan.
So Apple is going to have to figure out a way to wirelessly tether the watch to your screen accessory to siphon power. In the future, tethering would be a two-way transaction where the device requesting cellular data would pay for it by supplying battery power to the watch. Who knows how long that may take but I don’t doubt that Apple is already working on it.
I know I’m repeating myself but the importance of the Apple Watch warrants it. It is the future of the intelligent assistance that we all crave. Since it is a wearable, it’ll always trump any device that is stuck on your counter or in your car. The Apple Watch is the widgets that we wanted from Android. Having your widgets on your wrist is even better than having them on your phone home screen. And the Apple Watch is the future of the cellular hub. We should be able to pick the size of the screen that we want to use for various occasions.
