If a tree falls in the woods, but nobody with an iPhone was nearby, did it really fall? Verizon’s CEO seems to think that the answer to that question is “No”. And his actions back up his belief. Verizon literally waited to announce their nationwide 5G rollout to coincide with Apple’s launch of the new iPhone 12. That is some impressive clout that Apple is holding.
But have we not seen this story play out many times in the past? Android phones introduce some new technology like 4G LTE, contactless payments, or Facial Recognition. To which nobody cares except for a few techno geeks. Then when the iPhone gets it, the whole world discovers it and all of a sudden everyone is talking about it. Most non-tech people will even think that Apple invented it.
5G will explode because Apple, not Samsung, flipped a switch. Only Apple has the power to change the narrative like this. For the most part, Samsung is a mass producer of cheap and mid-tier phones. Their top tier Galaxy phones are outsold by the iPhone by quite a wide margin. Samsung doesn’t really drive the industry. Thus far, Apple has been the only company with enough power to move the industry in a particular direction.
5G has been available for a year. But on October 13th it had it’s coming out party. I have no doubt that 5G is headed for critical mass this year in terms of both user acceptance and network growth. If 5G isn’t available in your area yet. It soon will be. Why? Because it’s now available on the iPhone. Even if you’re an Android user, you will reap benefits from the iPhone 12 introduction.
