But here’s the thing. I find the Ultra to be ultra ugly. The smooth stainless steel of my Series 7 is so much more attractive from the side. The long elegant speaker on the Series 7 is much less visually jarring than the myriad of big holes on the Ultra. Then there’s the orange button smack dab in the middle. Orange is the one color I never wear.
It may not be fair for me to say that the Ultra is ugly because this watch has crossed the line from every day watch to single purpose sports equipment. Unlike the other Apple Watches, this one isn’t for everybody. Apple made a conscious decision to focus on a niche market at the expense of greater sales.
I came across a YouTube video earlier today reviewing the GMC Hummer EV. It made me chuckle because it seemed like almost everything about the Hummer applied to the Apple Watch Ultra. Who needs this? Even for me, the Apple Watch Ultra is full of functionality I’ll probably never need. I’ll never scuba dive to 100m under water or navigate by compass.
The Hummer review had a lot of the same vibe. It’s an amazing EV. Well built, well thought out, and full of functionality that only a very few people would never need. Who needs to crab walk out of their driveway?
It seems like the Hummer and the Apple Watch Ultra would appeal to a very similar market. They are both big, bold products for people who are heading to the mountains or ocean for adventure. In fact, I even wonder if the YouTube algorithm has already picked up on this similarity. Because I’ve NEVER searched for information on the Hummer. But I’ve watched a few hands-on videos on the Apple Watch Ultra.
Next thing I know, YouTube thinks that I would be interested in a new Hummer.
Here is the Hummer video which spawned this post…
