Bringing the World To You vs You To the World
It appears that both Tim Cook and I are in agreement that the future is about bringing the world to you and not about taking you to the world.
During the discussion with Shanahan today (via Silicon Republic), Cook was asked about what he expects to be the biggest tech developments in the next five to 10 years. The history of technology was about delivering people and things to their final destination. Cars, planes, and ships are all technologies of the past. Even spaceships are glorified steam boats delivering a few passengers at a time. These technologies of the past will continue to evolve but their impact on society will be gradual.
Simple economics dictates that the future is about bringing the world to you. People have limited time and resources. You could spend thousands of dollars and visit all the major museums of the world or you could take a virtual tour for free and visit two or three museums per day.
Even if money is no object, time waits for no man. Meaning that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. You could spend two years of your life training to visit the moon or you could take a virtual lunar visit while you wait for your food to cool down.
Moving data and connecting people is the technology which is going to have profound society changing impact. It is Apple, Google, and Facebook which are changing the world. Not Tesla, Toyota, or Boeing.
