Reliable supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities predicted the return of the ceramic Apple Watch this fall, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a next-gen watch. Kuo also predicted that the ECG feature would reach many more countries, but that’s already happened quickly with Apple Watch Series 4. —Zac Hall, 9to5Mac
Most of what I would want from a Series 5 Apple Watch is software related. More dynamic complications, more configurable watch faces, and YouTube videos. And I’d REALLY love an always-on time complication. To help conserve battery power, Apple could even make it small like the sunrise/sunset complication. And none of these items are a part of watchOS 6.
I think all of this would be possible on today’s Series 4. Maybe even on the Series 3 too. I used to look forward to Apple Watch updates because I wanted more speed. That itch subsided with the Series 3. Once the Series 3 solved the speed problem the next issue was the giant display bezels. The Series 4 solved that problem. I think Apple could very well skip an update this year. There’s no urgent need to shore up some major weakness any more.
From a hardware perspective there are two things I’d like but they’re probably way out there yet. I’d like a camera and a blood sugar tester.
All of this talk about Apple some day creating an under-screen camera would really be a boon for the Apple Watch. Then you could take selfies while you were out on a walk without your iPhone. I’ve been running without my iPhone since the Series 3 came out and I’ve got to admit. I reach for my non-existent iPhone to take a picture about once a month. I think “Crap, I have no camera. I wish my watch could take pictures”.
And for me, an EKG is a dud. I couldn’t care less about it. The heart rate monitor was great when it came out. As an avid runner it’s quite helpful to know your heart rate. But an EKG? I used it once when I first got my Series 4 and never thought about it again. But a blood sugar monitor would be useful on a daily basis.
There are two sides to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Diet and exercise. The heart rate sensor on the first Apple Watch stormed the world by helping everyone manage their exercise. If Apple could help everyone manage their diet by giving us real time feedback on blood sugar the Apple Watch would become unstoppable.
