The Series 7 Apple Watch Is a Big Upgrade…Literally

If you don’t want to upgrade to the Series 7 Apple Watch than I have a big warning for you. Do not even try it out. Because once you do, it makes the old Series 6 Apple Watch feel small.
Remember back when the iPhone 6 came out and everyone went crazy for the first iPhone with a screen bigger than 4 inches? That’s kind of what it feels like to get the Series 7.

When I first got my Series 7 I immediately noticed the increased utility of having everything larger. But I wasn’t sure if I could justify the cost just to get larger buttons and fonts. After a couple of days, I actually boxed up my watch and decided to sell it (cuz returning good products with no defect is unethical). I restored an old Series 5 which I still had in the house and started using that again.

But using my Series 7 made my Series 5 seem small. I felt like I had swapped a 44m Apple Watch for a 40mm watch. Plus, the black screen borders seemed comically thick. Remember how the early iPhones used to have that thick bezel at the top and bottom due to the home button. That’s how the black screen bezel on the older Apple Watch seemed to me. Just thick and I didn’t want to see it. A month ago I didn’t even notice it. Now, I hated it. The screen on the Series 7 looks beautiful and modern.

It only took a day for me to decide I was keeping my Series 7. Once you experience that gorgeous full screen display it’s hard to go back to a smaller watch. And it wasn’t just the looks either. I could use the  buttons easier. For the first time ever, I’m actually using the Apple Watch calculator instead of on my iPhone. And it’s easier to read e-mails and iMessages since you can see more on the screen without scrolling. And the new on-screen keyboard for messages is no joke. If you don’t want people to hear you dictate a message, this is great way to compose text messages without your iPhone.

Sometimes it’s hard to judge whether an upgrade is “worth it”. It’s a question that has to do with more than money. But if I try to live without my new device and decide that the old one isn’t good enough any more. Yeah, it’s definitely worth it. The new Apple Watch solves multiple problems with the Series 6. It’s better looking and easier to use.

I also wasn’t expecting the Series 7 case to be as different as it was. It seemed that all everyone could talk about was how it didn’t change except for getting a bigger screen. That’s not true. The corners are rounder and the lug placement is different.

Apple somehow changed the design of the watch so that you see more of the frame around the screen. It’s a subtle change but I like it. Whereas on the old watch the lug is closer to the screen on the Series 7 it’s farther down. The benefit is that you get to see more of that shiny stainless steel and the connector is more out of view.

I’m happy with my Apple Watch Series 7 but there is still so much that Apple needs to do with the Apple Watch. Since I go running without my iPhone there are numerous occasions where I wish that I could’ve snapped a quick photo. I’d love a camera on my Apple Watch. And I’m still requesting the ability to download and watch YouTube videos on my watch. Especially now with the larger screen. But I’m sure that’ll have to wait until there is a breakthrough in battery technology.

So yes, I’m keeping my stainless steel Series 7 Apple Watch. I made the mistake of wearing one for a couple of days and now I just can’t go back. It’s like using a larger phone screen and then trying to use your old small iPhone again. But even better, there are no drawbacks to using the larger Series 7 like there might be with using a Max iPhone. It’s all upside.
