The One Thing I Want an AirTag for Can’t Take One

My 4-pack of Apple’s new AirTags arrived on Friday and these little things are amazing. You can now ping your keys just like your iPhone! My wife and two of my kids took 3 of the AirTags which left one for me.
But my problem is this. The one thing in the world that I actually misplace more than once per month, can’t really take an AirTag. That would be my 2nd generation AirPods. I can think of only once in the previous 5 years or so where I was looking for my car keys. It’s not that hard to always know where your car keys are if you hang them up on a hook when you get home and keep them in your pocket when you leave the house.

I never lose my AirPods Pro either because those aren’t my around-the-house AirPods. I only use those for running outside or traveling. When it comes to my daily music and podcast duties it is my trusty 2nd Gen AirPods which get put into my pocket every morning.

My wife suggested that I get an AirPods case with a carabiner attachment so I could loop an AirTags keychain to it. But that would defeat part of why I like my 2nd Gen AirPods so much. The case is so smooth and small that it slides in and out of my pocket with ease. It’s one of the major reasons that I prefer the 2nd Gen AirPods over my AirPods Pro.

I don’t want a thick case with a keychain attached to it. And for the carabiner to be reliably strong, the case needs to be thick. Otherwise, it would be in danger of snapping off. And anything that is made of silicone is just horrible for getting in and out of your pocket.

What I REALLY want is for the next generation of AirPods to have a charging case with the equivalent of AirTags build in. Then when I leave my AirPods in a jacket or out on my patio, I can just pick up my iPhone and find them again. And if it’s built-in, the charging case could stay smooth and small.
