The latest example is the fact that they want to mandate what kind of power ports come on smart phones. According to The Verge, Europe is a step closer to requiring that all smartphones use USB-C ports in order to reduce e-waste. Of course, the notable target of this law would be Apple which uses the Lightning port on all iPhones.
It’s surprising that European governments have been trying to ignite a trade war with the United States. A war that thus far, the US government hasn’t been fighting back against. How long before American politicians start pushing back? I’m sure there are some juicy European targets that we could squeeze to get the EU to back off. All is fair in love and war.
But the larger issue here is that the EU has become a laughingstock to the rest of the world. European politicians are wringing their hands over what kind of power ports come on smart phones? Really? Does Europe not realize that they have a reputation of regulating companies to the point of making their own industries uncompetitive with America and Asia?
The rest of the world already knew that Europe was a bad place for manufacturing. Are Europeans now intent on ruining Europe as a market to sell products too? If Europe pushes their regulations too far they run the risk of falling on the negative side of that cost-to-benefit calculation. They are harming the European consumer more than helping at that point.
Making the EU politicians look even dumber is the strong probability that future smart phones will probably be portless. Why spend any time worrying about Lightning vs USB-C when in the near future, smartphones probably won’t have any ports?
But since those hapless EU politicians have nothing more important to do with their time. I have some suggestions on a few more problems that they can handle.
1. Require YouTube to not make videos darken when tapping the screen.
2. Force paper towel companies to add convenient “pull here to open” tabs
3. Force auto makers to add dust repellant dashboards to all vehicles
4. Require all video streaming services to make the other episode list easy to find.
This will keep the EU busy while the rest of the world governments tackle the important issues.
