But it wasn’t only tech’s impact on privacy that was illustrated. I was pleasantly surprised by the vision that the makers of the movie The Circle showed for the future of computing in the office. The movie follows the career of The Circle’s newest “guppy” Mae Holland and we catch a glimpse of how their employees work.
The Circle portrayed a future that was remarkably similar to what I had written about recently. It appears that tablets will pretty much displace laptops. Mae is issued a tablet on her first day and it becomes her central hub. The Circle employees dock their tablets at their desk and work from large monitors and full sized keyboards. As they get up from their desk to interact with their co-workers they pick up their tablets for impromptu meetings. They use pencils to input data into their tablets while they’re standing.
Perhaps someone could drop me an e-mail if I’m incorrect here but I don’t think there was a single laptop in the movie. It was all smartphones and tablets connected to big monitors. This all makes sense for office workers who will need to be mobile within a building or are carrying their main device home every night.
So if you get some spare time this week check out The Circle. It’s a fun movie and it’ll make you think about the future in more ways than one.
