I had some low expectations for this going in so I thought I’d try one episode and see how it went. Well, it hooked me from the get-go to the point of dethroning my previous #1 pick. The whole creepy setup of the disturbed mother playing house with her doll and the servant girl who goes along with it was so weirdly interesting I couldn’t stop watching. Each episode reveals more about who these people are and why they act the way they do. I also found the culinary skills of the father character fascinating. He’s some kind of food author who expounds on cooking science in interesting ways.
The Morning Show – #2
I liked this show so much that I’ve already written my full review here.
Truth Be Told - #3
I love mysteries where you follow clues to put together a puzzle. The storyline revolves around a podcaster who is investigating a crime. Although the twist is that she is the one who originally helped put the convict behind bars and she starts to wonder if she was wrong. And Octavia Spencer, who plays the lead of Poppy, is excellent. But Octavia typically makes any character she plays a delight to watch.
For All Mankind – #4
This could’ve been a great show but it’s brought down by the constant preachiness of the lesbian characters in the story to the point of becoming a huge plot in and of itself. Imagine the movie Apollo 13 with a couple of black NASA employees constantly whining about how NASA hates black people and all white people are terrible. That’s what this show is. Space Travel almost becomes a back drop for a Lesbian love story. They could’ve named this show “Lesbians In Space”. Outside of all the sexual politics, this is an interesting science fiction about the space race with an alternate history.
I enjoyed the anthology series of Amazing Stories but I found it hard to rank because each episode was so different. Some were great and others were just OK. So I’ll give it an honorable mention. As for the greatly anticipated See which deals with humanity after it evolves without sight, I can’t say. That’s because I just couldn’t bring myself to watch it yet. The whole premise of humanity without sight seemed so outlandish and unbelievable that every time I think about what to watch, something else slides in ahead of it.
Overall, I’m real impressed with Apple TV+. There is some great entertainment here and it’s almost to the point where my wife and I know that if we pick a show on Apple TV+ we almost can’t go wrong. That’s in stark contrast with Netflix or Amazon Prime which have some real losers. You can plainly see that Apple would rather have a few good shows as opposed to a huge selection that contains a lot of drivel.
I’m getting Apple TV+ for free now because it came with my iPhone 11 Pro. But already I can see that if Apple can maintain this high level of quality, I’d rather pay for Apple TV+ and drop one of my other subscriptions.
