I decide to play one of my favorite podcasts, The Cultcast, and hit the beautiful trails. So I’m a couple miles into my run and I get the notification ding on my watch. I glance at my watch but don’t see the red notification dot. What’s going on? I know I heard the ding. I stop and try to open iMessages to see if my wife just messaged me. But my fingers are all sweaty and the screen locks up due to the sweat on the glass. I’m going to have to stop running and try to find a dry piece of my clothing to wipe my fingers down. After a few minutes I finally get the watch to respond. Only to see…nothing. No messages, no calls, nothing has happened. I just stopped my run for nothing.
I resume my run and remember that I’m listening to The Cultcast. THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING. About ten minutes later it happened again. Another notification ding. And about ten minutes later the Apple Watch phone call ring went off. All…false…from someone recording on the podcast.
Even though I know full well it could be a false alarm from The Cultcast, I still look at my watch because most of the notification dings are valid. They are from me. But when I’m out on a run listening to my AirPods Pro, I can’t tell what is from my watch and what is a recorded notification on the podcast. They sound identical.
I subscribe to 23 different shows in my Podcast app and there is only one show that ever does this to me. It’s The Cultcast. In fact, if I think back over the past 5 years since the Apple Watch came out, there isn’t a single other show that has violated this rule even once, let alone monthly like The Cultcast.
I kid you not, The Cultcast comes out about 4 times per month and probably 1 or 2 of those shows someone has their Apple Watch going off regularly. How hard is it to mute your watch before you record? I’ve literally been wanting to write this blog post for years. I finally had a fit of rage out on the trails to actually make me do it.
I know, I know, why don’t I just NOT listen The Cultcast? Because it’s one of the best shows out there and I highly recommend it. I love listening to it when I go running especially because it’s usually the perfect length that I can start it when I begin my run and it’s over about when I’m done running. It’s not too short or too long. Plus, it’s a great mix of entertainment and insight. These guys aren’t just hilariously funny, they have deep insight into all things Apple.
Please, Please PLEASE! Erfon, Lewis, or Leander (my money is on Leander), whoever it is. Stop torturing your audience with phantom Apple Watch notifications.
