And I went into this with the mindset that I probably wouldn’t like it. I hate anti-hero’s. Part of the reason I even started episode 1 was because I wondered how they were going to build a series based on a dead character. If this turned out to be a show where we were supposed to root for the bad guy I was gonna bail.
But a funny thing happened right from the start. Mobius, played marvelously by Owen Wilson, started to dig into what makes Loki tick. This was the best scene of the entire series, and it was in episode 1. Loki gets to see his future life played out on screen, and where his choices lead.
You can say a lot of things about Loki but you can’t say he isn’t highly intelligent. Faced with the reality of where his selfish choices lead, you can almost see the wheels turning in his head, and he decides to try something new. Dare I say this story is almost redemptive? Whether Loki is ultimately one of the “white hats” always remains a bit murky.
But with Mobius there is no doubt. If you want to watch a show where you can root for the good guy, don’t worry. Owen Wilson makes Mobius such a likable character that you can’t help but root for him. He’s a big reason why I loved the show.
It’s TV Shows like Loki that reinforce for me that I wish movie theaters would just go away. I enjoy watching entertainment in my own home way more than going somewhere with greasy furniture, sticky floors, and a boisterous audience. And I like a good TV series more than a movie. You have time to really develop the plot and characters. This 7-episode Loki series was better than any 2-hour movie could’ve ever been. Only a few movies ever arise above being forgettable, but you never forget a series. It’s an event.
