Everyone has covered the technical differences between Samsungs new Galaxy S21 Ultra vs iPhones 12 Pro Max. But it seems that everyone has failed to acknowledge the elephant in the room. The S21 Ultra is one butt-ugly phone. It maybe the ugliest phone I’ve ever seen. And kind of like I could never drive a car that I thought was ugly. I don’t think I could ever use the Galaxy S21 Ultra. It’s that bad.
For Starters, the Proportion Are Bad
First, there’s the problem of how oblong it is. It’s so freakin’ tall and narrow. It looks like a lampoon someone made 5 years ago about how ugly phones could get in the future. I’ve been writing for years how I hope that Apple doesn’t follow the same route as Samsung.

The only thing wrong about this prophetic lampoon was that Samsung would be the offender.
Besides the obvious ugliness factor, there are also practical reasons why I’m glad that Apple has thus far resisted Samsung’s design ethos of tall and narrow. In short, the web is easier to read on a phone with a little extra width. And tall phones hurt you hip bone when you sit down.
Those Cameras Are HIDEOUS
I can’t believe people at Samsung actually thought this was a nice looking phone. It’s a train wreck. The three cameras on top of one another look…weird. Then the two to the right look haphazardly thrown in.
Then there’s the way the upper left of the phone looks out-of-sync with the rest of the phone. Apple framed their square-shaped camera module within the same back glass as the rest of the phone. I’m sure it was a significant extra expense to include those slim pieces of glass around the camera module but it’s worth it. It gives the back of the phone a cohesive look. The S21 Ultra looks like it has a pirate’s eye patch.
At least last year Samsung tried to hide the weird look of the camera modules with some black camouflage. Last years phone looks less hideous without the riddled with bullets look.

Without a doubt, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is one of the worst phone designs ever. Samsung should be ashamed for unleashing this ugliness on the public. For all the naysayers who say looks don’t matter. You’re wrong. I’ve been in the business world for over 2 decades and I’ll tell you, looks very much matter. It can be a life or death issue for products. That’s why companies spend so much on packaging.
And I’ll bet you naysayers pick the nicest looking apples at the grocery store.
