Back in the summer of 2020 I was a little worried about them because they started exhibiting an odd popping noise. But a software update in the fall of 2020 seems to have cleared that issue. They’ve been working fine ever since.
But I’m still happy to hear that there is now a 2nd generation HomePod about to be released. I think I’ll buy another pair for my home gym. And now if one of my other HomePods ever bites the dust I’ll feel better about buying a new replacement. As good as the original HomePod still is, I wouldn’t relish the idea of spending $300+ on a 5 year old product.
If you haven’t ever listened to the full sized HomePod you really should really try to get a demo somewhere. If you like music anyway. There is such clarity and separation to the instruments. And the frequency response, is amazing for a speaker of this small size. People aren’t fans of the original HomePod because they were really loud or bassy. They aren’t really all that loud and the bass is good but lots of speakers have decent bass. With the HomePod, it’s all about the quality of everything else.
I just hope that the 2nd generation doesn’t lose any of that. But I had a similar worry with the 2nd generation of the AirPods Pro which turned out to be unfounded. I’ll be happy if the HomePod sound quality is the same, but I think that just like the AirPods Pro, Apple could make them even better.
