Fortnite Booted From Apple’s AppStore...And No One Cares

Epic is a serial antagonizer. They’ve publicly clashed with Sony over cross-platform play and made a big stink about bypassing the Google Play Store.  And if they catch you bypassing THEIR Appstore they’ll sue you too. Ironic. They are ruthless with companies that are smaller than them and they don’t hesitate to publicly lie about companies larger than them.
It’s a wonder that they’ve made it this far without locking horns with Apple. But the funniest thing in my view is that after Apple kicked them off the AppStore, no one seems to care. Or barely notice. Here’s why.

Fortnite is one of those games that really demands a dedicated game controller to be any good at it. Who is seriously playing Fortnite on a touchscreen device? My 19 and 26 year old sons play on their PS4s. And people over the age of 30 tend to use a PC. Serious gamers thumb their noses at touchscreen gaming.

Epic was a latecomer to the mobile gaming scene. And it’s not hard to understand why. Playing a game like Fortnite on a touchscreen sucks. It’s not a big part of Epic’s business. Apple noted in the emergency injunction court hearing that iOS makes up about 12% of Epic’s total business. It’s not nothing, but it’s not like Apple booting them from the AppStore is going to cause Epic to have an existential crisis.

I’m fairly certain that Epic is going to lose their court case handily. If they even go through with it that is. After the tongue lashing that the judge gave them they may reconsider the amount of money it’s going to cost to continue. The judge basically accused Epic of being like one of those insurance scammers that runs into your car bumper to sue you for damages.

If Apple is going to be forced to defend their AppStore practices in court, they really couldn’t have asked for a better party to do it against. For starters Epic has already gotten off on the wrong foot with this judge. Epic itself has been sued by content creators.  And Epic is a hard company for anyone to have sympathy for. In addition to being serial antagonizers, they operate a game that is about arming everyone with guns and killing each other. They try to suck money out of children and people who don’t know any better.
