Fight the Good Fight Apple

Everybody loves to give away money that belongs to someone else and feel righteous about it.
In the years long saga between Apple and Epic Games, Judge Roger’s has found in Apple’s favor on almost every count. Keep that in mind as the anti-Apple slant in the press tries to portray the recent court decision as some kind of monumental beat-down against Apple. The one and only area that Epic Games took any territory from Apple was on the issue of whether developers could link back to their own independent storefronts. This last point was finally settled and the judge declared that Apple’s current solution doesn’t go far enough in favor of the developers. But Apple was absolutely right to defend their storefront and it’s ludicrous to think that slimy developers can advertise their products on Apple’s AppStore and then point customers to an offline store thereby cutting Apple out of their commission. Is there any lower scum in business than these iOS software businesses which publicly attack Apple for doing what any retail business would do? Apple should make it their mission to create competing apps which would run every one of them out of business.

As for me, I will never purchase any apps from those who link out of the AppStore. Whenever I get a new iPhone having all of my apps in the AppStore makes reloading them so much easier. Remember the bad old days back in 2005 when you upgraded your first desktop computer? Looking for software codes and visiting 40 different websites to reload software sucked. These selfish iOS software businesses want to return to that nasty software paradigm because it’s good for them. Never mind customer convenience.

Let me illustrate Apple’s current situation in a way that is easier to understand for the masses. Imagine that you start an eBay business selling items which you purchase second-hand items at garage sales. And say that you are wildly successful and your name becomes well known to thrifty shoppers who can’t visit all those garage sales themselves.  Soon you’re doing more business than you ever imagined was possible, so you hire scores of people to shop for you and the money comes pouring in.
Now say that one of your old neighbors decides to do the same thing and essentially becomes a competitor. But since he’s small and not well known no one buys from him. Either because they don’t know about him or they just don’t trust him. So this old neighbor comes to you and says that since everyone goes to look at your listings on eBay, he wants you to let him advertise his listings in YOUR store. And furthermore, since he paid for the merchandise, he isn’t going to cut you in on any commission. He wants you to steer your customers to him. For nothing.
Yeah, crazy right? That’s exactly why Tim Cook was fighting this preposterous situation. Apple must appeal this decision for the sake of future businesses that don’t have Apple’s treasure chests overflowing with Gold. Apple owes it to capitalism and for all that is righteous and just.
Why does this issue get my ire up? For two reasons. One, I love my iPhone. And unlike Google which is ad-supported, the iPhone operation system is funded by AppStore commissions. Attacks on the AppStore are attacks on iPhone customers. And second, this is an attack on capitalism by socialists who believe that winners in society need to subsidize the losers. Sorry, but capitalism believes that the losers need to sell their assets to the winners who are more efficient at converting capital to profit.
