I’ve been saying for years that the iMac makes no financial sense. Why was I probably the only person on Earth saying this? Because I’m a financial analyst who used to support Gateway customer support operations and had to calculate warranty reserves.
The problem with the iMac was alway this. Relatively small problems would trigger huge warranty costs because Apple had to replace the whole unit. As opposed to a desktop computer where you don’t need to replace the customer’s stand-alone monitor.
The new 24” M1 iMac mitigates this issue somewhat. It’s a lot easier to replace a $1300 iMac than a $2000 one. Apple can make the numbers work easier on an iMac that is essentially an iPad with a big screen.
I’m not surprised that the 27” iMac is dead. Although, I may be the only one.
