Dear Apple, Don’t Ever Go Back to a Live WWDC Keynote

I had a feeling that if Apple did a pre-recorded WWDC that I would like it better than the old live format. That’s because I always hate the live versions of the various podcasts that I listen too. The constant audience applause, the pandering to the audience, and an episode that rambles and constantly goes off on rabbit trails makes me just skip it. Those live podcasts may be enjoyable to make or attend but they make for terrible episodes for everyone else to listen too later.
And whenever I want to rewatch a part of an Apple Keynote, I always prefer the condensed edited versions on YouTube versus bringing up the original video from Apple.  YouTube montages with titles like “Everything announced in 10 minutes” or “The iPhone Announcements In Under 3 Minutes” are much easier to watch. Why? Because they take out all of the audience applause which the speakers have to wait for. It’s all the information you’re looking for with none of the flab.

So this year’s edited WWDC Keynote with it’s tighter timeline was a joy to watch. I much preferred the fast pace of information delivery versus the usual waiting for people to walk on stage, walk off, waiting for a demo game to load, etc. There were no wasted seconds. It was better than a YouTube montage.

And it was more interesting because the stage can be an inhibiting factor. Cutting the cord to the stage allowed the presenters to be anywhere they chose. The audience felt like they were teleporting all over Apple Park. The presenters weren’t constrained by only what they could bring on stage. There’s nothing wrong with presenting on a stage. But it was great seeing the gym or lab in the background versus every speaker having the same black stage backdrop for the last decade or so.

It’s been a month since WWDC has concluded and I’ve seen a few takes by Apple writers who opined for a return to the old live format. That’s crazy. I think that what you prefer says more about you than the quality of the Keynote. Most of those who I’ve heard who want the old live format are people who used to attend personally or probably want to in the future.  I think what they really want is a good old fashioned church revival. Where they can gather with the other faithful and bask in the exhortation from the Apple evangelists.

There’s a good chance that Apple will return to the old live format as soon as they can. At least for the main opening Keynote. It’s in their best interest. As I mentioned, this is kind of like Apple-church. And Apple wants their members there in person to be encouraged to keep the faith. And just like real church, that’s always done better live and in person.

In the past, I’ve had a hard time sitting through an entire WWDC opening Keynote. But not this time. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and when it was over, I thought “It’s already done?”. This was the best WWDC opening Keynote ever. I hope Apple keeps this format.
