The problem comes in when you try to mix this feature with Live Photos. Live Photos is another thing that I love about the iPhone. It makes going back through your memories an almost magical experience when you can hear what was going on at the time and see what happened just prior or after the photo. Youd’ be surprised how many times you hear someone’s voice not in the photo and forgot that person was standing behind you. I always make sure to turn on Live Photos when taking photos at family events.
When scrolling through your Live Photos you trigger the video play by doing a long press on the picture. But now, to trigger the image grab function you also have to do a long press on the object. Can you start to see where I’m going with this?
Yeah, iOS 16 gets confused on whether you want to see the Live Photo video footage OR do a photo object grab. It gets all wonky. And I don’t blame it, you are using the same command. How is Apple ever going to iron out using the same command for two different functions?
Gee, 3D Touch would sure have been handy right about now. I miss it terribly. Every time I write about it, I say this “Using Long Press feels like having to hold the toilet handle down to trigger the flush”. Whereas, 3D Touch felt like pressing a button. I love buttons.
iPHone users would have been well-served if they could have one command for Live Photos and another for photo object grab. 3D Touch would have been perfect for object grabs. And this problem is only going to get worse as new functions are invented in the future.
When Apple is dealing with devices that don’t have an integrated keyboard, cultivating a language that doesn’t require letters is of paramount importance. Enhancing the touch language, not cutting down, was the direction Apple should’ve went.
The public would’ve eventually embraced it and it was a mistake to think they wouldn’t. In fact, it is must-have features like photo object grab where people learn to use new functions. It’s time to bring back 3D Touch.
