Nintendo Switch: Betting Against Homebound Consoles

Mobile vs Homebound

If I see any writers who are on the Amazon Echo bandwagon come out and praise Nintendo’s Switch my head is going to explode. Either you are onboard with a mobile landscape where your information is tied directly to you or you are for the old paradigm where it’s tied to your house. Pick one, because these two ideas are at odds with each other.
The homebound console is a dumb idea and it’s killing the gaming console market. The whole concept of only being usable in your house doesn’t make any sense in today’s world. That’s a relic of the time when we all watched our news on a network at 6pm.

There’s been a lot of handwringing by hard core gamers that their beloved consoles like Sony’s PS4 and Microsofts Xbox may not be able to survive much longer. Whether or not these products generate a large enough market of consumers to sustain their development is an open question.  With the big unveiling of Nintendo’s impressive Switch it looks like they’re betting against the home-bound console.

Gaming has moved beyond the house years ago with the advent of online gaming. That bought the home console a few more years. But Nintendo believes that this was gaming’s last gasp and soon gamers will demand access whether they are at home or not. Why not play in the car or at Grandma’s house?

I agree with Nintendo. Producing information devices that are tied to your house makes about as much sense as telephones that are tethered to your wall.
