The iPhone Is the Place to Be
I’ve been noticing a thread lately by writers in the tech community that goes something along the lines of “Smartphones are no longer exciting.” And some of these same writers seem to think that the century’s old technology of automobiles is the next big thing. That’s like dumping Susan Sarandon because she’s too old and asking Cher out for a date. It’s completely contradictory.
Sorry, but cars are old news and nothing about them is exciting unless it involves the sweet sound of exhaust. Electric cars are nothing new and about as interesting as electric stoves or lawnmowers. And self-driving cars are just the next step in refining the horse-drawn wagon.
But smartphones, where do we begin? The kind of data that is coming to us is morphing almost daily. People are connecting in new ways. Wearables are multiplying and getting more powerful. Then there’s the virtual and augmented reality devices that are looming on the horizon. How will the smartphone interact with these new devices? How will the form factor change?
Almost all of the exciting advancements that are being made in tech seem to be connected to smartphones in some way. Probably, because we all carry them with us almost all the time.
And the car? It’ll get you to work and back. Oh wait, it does that already. No, someday it’ll allow you to read a book while you travel. Oh wait, I can do that already when my wife drives. But someday it’ll come and pick you up and you don’t have to park it! Hmm, like a taxi?
No, cars are about as hot as washing machines. Anyone who is jaded by smartphones must be absolutely disgusted by automobiles if they want to extend their logic. All the action in the future is going to revolve around the smartphone and whatever form it evolves into. Apple is in exactly the right spot if they want to be in the center of the action going forward.
