You can’t watch Gavin Belson and not think about Musk standing on stage when the unbreakable windows of his Cybertruck…break. I didn’t think it could get any worse for Musk. But last week Tesla made the mistake of staging what they called “AI Day” to tout their non-existent technology in robotics. The fact that everyone is laughing about a guy wearing a robot suit dancing on stage tells you everything that you need to know. The people who report to Musk are afraid to tell him when he has a dumb idea.
Even hard-core Tesla defenders are stating that they are flummoxed as to why Tesla would do this. The headlines are full of bewildered journalists trying to makes sense of a seemingly embarrassing event for Tesla.
But wait…it gets worse. Tesla admitted to the whole world that over the past few years they haven’t been collecting driving data and feeding an artificial intelligence with it. The dancing robot only called attention to the fact that Musk likes to make promises that he can’t keep. There is still no Tesla Roadster, no semi-truck, no solar powered charging stations, and no level 5 autonomous driving. The big difference now, is that when Musk makes these big bold announcements, people are starting to laugh at him.
No this wasn’t some kind of 3D chess move to bump all the bad news coming out about the NHTSA investigation and SolarCity trial. This is exactly what it appears to be. These demo fails occur because everyone is afraid to tell him the truth. And the character of Gavin Belson was based on Elon Musk.
